Let’s be real - there is SO much we didn’t learn in school.

The second we step into running a business on our own, it can feel very isolating. On top of that, the education we receive in evidence-based medical nutrition therapy for fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum clients is seriously lacking and very rooted in weight bias.

Believe me when I say that I have been there.

As an eager graduate student, I tried my best to soak up all the information I possibly could about intuitive eating, Health at Every Size, building a private practice, and all things fertility and pregnancy nutrition. I wrote my master’s paper on the weight inclusive approach to gestational diabetes, and took it upon myself to dive deeper where my graduate courses only touched the surface.

With some great and really not-so-great experiences as an intern, I knew I was probably too sassy and driven to work for anyone else for long. On top of that, recognizing how underpaid the dietetics field is, I knew that without generational wealth, building financial security for myself was going to be difficult in a regular clinical job. So, in January 2019 I opened Feed Your Zest Nutrition & Wellness right after passing my RD exam while babysitting, and eventually snagging a part time job at an eating disorder clinic here in Charlotte.

Whoa. Talk about a financially rocky year. I had no family financial support, no husband to lean on, and was living in a new city.

I remember August of 2019, I hit a wall. How the hell was my business supposed to grow? How was I supposed to support myself financially? OBGYN clinics in town were literally hanging up on me saying, “we already have dietitians.” Everything felt impossible.

Thank goodness for therapy, supportive friends, and supervision.

I pushed through, focused on building relationships and improving my brand messaging, and eventually, the clients slowly trickled in. A year later in August 2020, I quit my part time job (loved the clients…. did not love the toxic work environment) and took Feed Your Zest full time. I was able to pay off my credit card debt and started actually being able to save.

Since then, I’ve niched down to exclusively focusing on weight inclusive fertility and pregnancy nutrition, worked with dozens of 1:1 clients, mentored interns, launched two online courses, given multiple professional talks and guest lectures, and am making more than double what I would have made as a clinical dietitian. I’ve immersed myself in the local and online maternal health communities, and continued to be a sponge for whatever information I can find to support my clients.

Without supervision, I never would have come to the realization that solely eating disorder clients was not what filled my cup. I learned to recognize the signs of burnout, and how to know when to take a break. I got space to process my fears, get honest feedback, learn my strengths, and hone my counseling skills. I got the inside scoop into medical nutrition therapy for PCOS that I never would have gotten anywhere else. Above all, I built a relationship with a mentor who saw my potential and challenged me, clinically and in my business.

Knowing how valuable that supervision relationship was to me, I wanted to provide that support to other RDs, too.

The weight inclusive approach to reproductive health can be literally life saving, and we need more dietitians confident in supporting their clients through pregnancy and beyond without restrictive dieting. On top of this, the more money we make collectively as dietitians, the more good we can do, and the more we can give back.

My practice values as a dietitian are:

  • Empathy - I feel deeply, and value greatly my clients’ lived experience. I want to help you bring your lived experience into your work as an RD.

  • Peace - an intuitive relationship with food brings peace, as does listening to your business intuition.

  • Freedom - whether from racism, sexism, healthism, fat phobia, or other forms of inequity, I value digging deeper to help you find liberation for yourself and your clients.

  • Fun - we may or may not end up being friends in this process ;)
