More greens, less sugar, more hours in the gym… you thought your were doing what was right for your body. And then you went off the pill, and Aunt Flo did not come as planned.
What was up?? Maybe you added a supplement, or stopped drinking coffee, or tried acupuncture… but nothing seemed to bring back your period regularly.
In today’s wellness-obsessed culture, the idea that perfect eating will lead to your best health and happiness is a trap that I see so many clients fall into. It leads to people to feel like they need to underfeed and overwork their bodies, at the expense of both their mental and physical health.
Does this sound like you? If you’re struggling with a missing period and dealing with a difficult relationship with food, know that you are not alone. Disordered eating affects up to 2/3 of women in the US. On top of this, approximately 50% of women in the US who exercise regularly experience subtle menstrual disorders, and about 30% experience amenorrhea, or total loss of their period. Hypothalamic amenorrhea is a hormonal disturbance in the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis caused by undernourishment, over-exercise, and/or high levels of stress that results in loss of period and infertility. According to the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, hypothalamic amenorrhea is responsible for 20–35% of secondary amenorrhea cases.
Diet culture has fed us lies that being smaller is better, and that cutting out is better than adding in. If you’re ready to get your period back and heal your relationship with food, I would love to walk alongside you in your journey.
